Week 6: Self-Mastery

Character is determined by the extent to which we can master ourselves toward good ends.
-Elder N. Eldon Tanner

This week seemed to be in knowing ourselves and self-mastery. Who we want to become? Who we are? I got to read/listen to Elder N. Eldon Tanner’s talk called Success is Gauged by Self-Mastery from April 1975 General Conference and I rather enjoyed it. I am so thankful that there is a huge record of almost every talk given in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but I am also guilty for not listening to them. Elder Tanner talks of finding what we love to do and mastering it by having self-control, self-mastery, courage, strength, and determination to do it. He talks of his grandson who wanted to 100% at going to church and Elder Tanner challenged him go to church for a whole year and he would fund his mission. When he challenged him, he wasn’t thinking he would do it, but he proved him wrong and succeeded. His grandson knew what he wanted and he has the discipline and self-mastery to do it. Elder Tanner is saying that now matter what or where we are, we are all able to succeed.

To remember:

Two important elements in Self-Mastery:

            1. Determine your course or set sails of moral standards
       2. The willpower or the wind in the sails carrying one forward.
